Arsenal’s hopes of completing a summer deal for Lyon’s Clement Grenier have suffered a set-back, with news that the French side are confident of keeping him.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with the 22-year-old over the course of the last few months, with Arsene Wenger thought to be a big fan of the midfielder.
The north Londoners are in the market for a number of new players in the coming months after a tense end to the season almost saw them slip out of the top four and miss out on Champions League qualification.
Grenier was believed to be near the summit of their list, but Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas is confident that the youngster will stay at Stade Gerland.
“Grenier will be here next year,” he told Sky Sports.
“We’re looking at a one-year extension, perhaps more.”
Grenier is currently entering the last year of his contract, and Wenger was believed to have been confident of tying up a cut-price move.
The playmaker is thought of as one of the best young talents in French football, and someone that has a bright future ahead of him.
Despite his age, and a wealth of other experienced players of the same nationality, Grenier recently won his first senior cap with France.
Arsenal fans, should Arsene Wenger go all out for Clement Grenier?
