Former striker John Hartson believes that Kieran Tierney will turn out to be a bargain for Arsenal at £25m.

What did he say?

Tierney, 22, arrived at the Emirates on a five-year deal after leaving his boyhood club Celtic but his debut was significantly delayed after a reoccurring hip injury that has prevented him from making a Premier League start.

He did make his debut during the Gunners' 5-0 win against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup, however.

And Hartson has told The Daily Record that the Gunners' have a bargain in Tierney.

"Arsenal probably got him on the cheap if you look at the fact Manchester United paid £50 million for Aaron Wan-Bissaka," he said.

"Also, average players are going for £30 million or £40 million and Kieran is certainly not average. Celtic could have held out for another £5 million or so but it is still good money they have banked, especially due to the fact he has come through the ranks and hasn’t cost the club a penny.

“He is worth £25 million and he can excel in a different league because there’s a perception the Scottish league is just not as good.”

Great signing

With the calibre of player that Kieran Tierney is, it is astonishing that the Gunners paid so little for someone with so much quality.

During the 4-0 win over Standard Liege, Tierney played his first 90 minutes for the club and managed to get an assist and had a pass success rate of 92.9%. From an attacking point of view, he also managed to accumulate four successful key passes and two dribbles.

Hartson is right when the former Wales international compares the Scotsman with the likes of Wan-Bissaka of Manchester United. During his short time with the Red Devils, the highest passing accuracy the England international has managed was 86.7% against Crystal Palace and is not as an offensive-minded fullback.

If Tierney comes back to full fitness and continues in the manner that he has been, he will go down as one of the signings of the season.

As Hartson said, both Celtic and Arsenal have benefitted from the transfer and the Scotsman can now excel at the highest level.
