The Gunners’ star was deployed in the deepest role of a central diamond last night as the Three Lions beat Switzerland 2-0 to get their EURO 2016 qualification campaign off to the best possible start and was impressive in the position.
Wilshere may be forced to adapt to the role at both club and international level over the coming few years, with competition within both the England and Arsenal squads intense.
Although not a natural in that area of the pitch, the 22-year-old says that he’s ready to learn from the likes of Javier Mascherano and Italian superstar Pirlo to allow him to function well at the base of the midfield:
“I spoke with the manager and Gary Neville in the week and they told me they wanted me to play that role and I quite enjoyed it,” he told the FA’s official website.
“It was my first time ever playing there so, over the next month or so, I am going to look at a few videos of this game and of players who play in that position regularly – Pirlo, Mascherano and players like that – and I’ll get better.
“I felt it went well [on Monday] but, next time we meet up, I feel it can only go better.”
