Arsenal eye cut-price defensive solution

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is plotting to make a cut-price January move for Malaga left-back Vitorino Antunes, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Gunners are woefully short of options at the back after a disappointing summer of transfer activity, in a defensive sense, and a serious batch of injuries to key stars since the start of the season.

Antunes has emerged as an option for Wenger, with the La Liga ace’s £2.5m release clause particularly tempting.

Malaga themselves are rumoured to be open to a deal involving the Portuguese full-back, which could see him drafted in over the winter to support Kieran Gibbs.

Antunes spent much of his early career in his homeland before joining Roma in 2007.

He largely failed to live up to expectations at the Stadio Olimpico, with the majority of his five years at the club spent out on various loan deals.

He moved to Pacos de Ferreira in 2012 and Malaga swooped for his signature last year.
