Arsenal eyeing top class January duo to solve problem position

Arsenal are assessing Sporting CP’s William Carvalho and Lars Bender of Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports from The Telegraph.

The Gunners are currently suffering with a central midfield injury crisis, with Arsene Wenger having lost first choice pair Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla to long-term injuries in the space of the past two weeks.

Their fitness concerns will see the Frenchman lean on reserve options over the hectic Christmas period, but reports claim that he’s considering additions for next month already, with Carvalho and Bender on his radar.

The former is believed to be the top target, with the Portuguese enforcer having been one of Sporting’s key men for some time.

However, the Lisbon giants want at least £25m for their star and are reluctant to sell as they fear they may slip from the top of the Premeira Liga should their midfielder head away.

26-year-old Bender is an alternative, but the German ace is out injured until the New Year, so there are serious doubts surrounding his ability to come in and make an instant impact.

Reports also claim that Wenger could look to use the loan market, as he did when he signed experienced Sweden international Kim Kallstrom from Spartak Moscow in 2014.
