The Daily Mail reports that Arsene Wenger is set to dip into the remainder of his £70 million war chest in the summer to sign the Aston Villa and West Ham ace’s.
Despite Olivier Giroud’s impressive start to the season, Wenger is believed to think that one more striker is needed to help the side in their quest for silverware.
Benteke is reckoned to be his number one option following a number of displays that have once again caught the eye this season. North London rivals Tottenham also maintain an interest in the Belgian international, but also are thought to be leading the race for the 22 year old’s signature.
The Frenchman also wants to bolster his defensive options to ensure his team have a squad capable of challenging on all fronts.
The Gunners face a further test of their credentials this week following their impressive 2-0 victory over Liverpool at the Emirates on Saturday.
Arsenal are due to face Borussia Dortmund in Germany midweek, before travelling to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on the weekend.
Wenger’s charges currently hold a five point advantage ahead of the nearest challengers in the Premier League.
