Arsenal face competition from Atletico for midfield enforcer

TalkSport are reporting that Arsenal are interested in signing long-term target Maxime Gonalons from French club Lyon, although they face competition from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

The French midfielder has been highly impressive for Lyon this season, helping them climb to the top of the Ligue 1 table.

The 25-year-old defensive midfielder has been scouted by a number of top European teams this campaign,

While a move to either Arsenal or Atletico Madrid would surely represent a step up in Gonalons’ career, the two Champions League participants may be disappointed in their pursuit of the player in the summer, with the Frenchman expressing his desire to captain Lyon when they move into their new stadium for the 2015/16 season.

Gonalons has been with Lyon for his whole playing career, having started out at the club’s academy. He won the French Cup in the 2011/12 season, and has represented his country on six occasions.
