Following Petr Cech’s performance against Manchester City on Sunday, Bayer Leverkusen took to Twitter to mock the veteran shot-stopper’s attempts at playing the ball out from the back.

The German club implied that Bernd Leno – their own former player – who was sat on the Gunners’ bench, would have been a better option for Arsenal between the sticks than Cech.
The Arsenal No. 1 responded to Leverkusen on Twitter and accused the Bundesliga outfit of not sharing his own values of sportsmanship and professionalism.
.@Arsenal we share important values which make us a big club not only on the football side . Fair competition, professionalism and sportsmanship are the biggest ones you teach young footballers and it’s sad to see when other clubs don’t share the same values. .@bayer04_en

Cech’s showing against the Premier League champions understandably came in for some criticism. A particularly nervy moment came for the home crowd when Cech nearly swept an attempted pass into his own goal. However, the 36-year-old also made some vital saves to keep the Gunners in the game.
Following Leverkusen’s comments, many Arsenal fans on Twitter stepped in to defend their ‘keeper and assure him that he continues to have their support…

Petr, you’re bigger than Bayer Leverkusen. Let them have their Twitter banter. It’s the only way they can stay relevant.

Love you Cech! A legend and gentleman of the game!

Banter is fine and all that but considering @bayer04fussball have won nothing of note in their entire history they should probably not be bantering as much as they do!

It was a bit of a tasteless joke Petr but don’t let it get to you. Of course they’re going to want to see Leno as he’s their former player and a top keeper. But you are Petr Cech, our number 1, show them what you can do on the pitch #COYG #AFC #Arsenal #WearetheArsenal
