Arsenal opened their Premier League account with a routine 1-0 win over Newcastle on Sunday afternoon as a solitary strike from Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang was enough for the Gunners.

Unai Emery chose to make Granit Xhaka skipper during the game as he made his 100th Premier League appearance in Arsenal colours. Following the departure of club captain Laurent Koscielny, it appears as though the Swiss is next in line to replace him in that role.

However, after his performance in midfield at St James' Park it left much of the Arsenal fanbase incredibly divided over his efforts.

Some praised the Switzerland international as one said if Xhaka wasn't playing it would have been a loss for the north London outfit. Another fan said he was superb with his positioning.

Yet other supporters decided to lay into the 26-year-old. One individual claimed the Premier League wasn't for him as he was branded the main negative from the match.

The debate led to one tweeter seemingly baffled at some of the hate the 6 foot man gets.

Xhaka finished the match with a pass completion rate of 84.5% whilst picking up a customary yellow card. He also won two aerial duels and made three tackles, per WhoScored.

Here's the best of the debate.
