Arsenal fans furious as referee turns game on its head

Minutes after Arsenal were turned down for a stonewall penalty on Alexis Sanchez, Sunderland are awarded a spot kick at the other end. Some clumsy goalkeeping from Petr Cech brought down the hard working Duncan Watmore in the Arsenal box, with Jermain Defoe doing the necessary from 12 yards shortly after.

With the game brought back to 1-1 after Arsenal’s dominance throughout, fury spread across the Arsenal team. Sanchez earned himself a little note in the referees book for his complaints, with the Gunners understandably feeling hard done by. Decisions don’t get much worse than Martin Atkinson’s to turn down Sanchez’s penalty claims, but that does little to excuse the poor defending that let Watmore through.

Arsenal fans really, really aren’t pleased with Atkinson.

Then again, however angry you get this sort of comment is pretty ugly reading.

Atkinson probably isn’t too popular in the North London area about now.

Some Arsenal fans found someone else to direct their anger at, which is sort of nice.

Others just need to familiarise themselves with the law changes…
