A youthful looking Arsenal side almost earned a draw away to Manchester United on Sunday but ultimately fell to a 2-1 defeat in the English Premier League.
Arsene Wenger opted to give a first team chance to the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Reiss Nelson and Konstantinos Mavropanos ahead of the club’s crucial UEFA Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid on Thursday.
Only losing due to a stoppage time Marouane Fellaini effort, fans were generally pleased with the performance of the rotated side and had particular praise for Mavropanos in the heart of the Gunners defence, who was making his debut.
The Greek U21 international only joined the club January but is clearly progressing well at the Emirates and coped with the likes of Romelu Lukaku well at Old Trafford.
Fans are now excited about his future and some are even calling for him to get more starts before the end of the season.
Has Wenger unearthed another gem in the closing stages of his career at the club?
Supporters took to Twitter to share their thoughts…
#Mavropanos has been brilliant today on his debut. Begs the question why – if true – are we targeting #Sokratis when we have a young commanding CB in the system already. Different frame of CB should be targeted this summer with this in mind, IMO. #AFC

Dinos Mavropanos. Remember the name.
Massive credit to this man today. Defended superbly against one of the best strikers in the league, in Lukaku.

Just also want to quickly say how proud I am of the youthful Arsenal side that travelled to Old Trafford and nearly got a respectful 1-1 draw over there. Unfortunate at the end. Mavropanos is a player. #COYG #AFC

I'm a top fan of Mavropanos now. On his debut against a top team, he was unshakeable & well composed. I'm cheering that kid anyday, anytime & anywhere. Mustafi & Koscielny should learn some tackling & clearance codes from him. #AFC

All the youngsters out there today can walk away feeling proud of themselves. Mavropanos, Nelson and Maitland-Niles all performed superbly. Hope to see even more of them in the first team next season. #afc
