Arsenal fans question Mustafi’s future following Sokratis and Chambers deals

Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi was heavily criticised by fans last season, particularly towards the end of the campaign when he made some notable errors.

The centre-back, who has earned 20 international caps for Germany, was caught out numerous times, which proved costly, and rumours began rumbling regarding his long-term future at the Emirates.

When Unai Emery took over as manager from long-standing coach Arsene Wenger, he did not make it clear whether Mustafi will be part of his plans, but the Spaniard has moved quickly to recruit members to strengthen the defence.

Right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner has joined on a free transfer from Juventus, while goalkeeper Bernd Leno recently signed from Bayer Leverkusen.

On Monday, the Gunners announced via their official website that Greek international Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who can play central defence or on the right, has joined from Borussia Dortmund on a long-term deal.

One day later, the North London outfit made another announcement, this time confirming that Calum Chambers has penned a contract extension.

Given that Rob Holding also recently signed fresh terms at Arsenal, fans have raised questions over Mustafi’s position at the club.
