After a long wait, Arsenal fans finally got to see their team under the guidance of someone other than Arsene Wenger as they lined up against Manchester City in their opening fixture of the Premier League.
Unfortunately it wasn’t to be a happy welcome to the Emirates for Unai Emery as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to the champions.
It was always going to be a big ask for the new manager after failing to beat Pep Guardiola in ten meetings in La Liga and bedding in a number of new signings against the outstanding team in the Premier League.
Two new faces started against City, with Sokratis featuring at centre-back and 19-year-old Matteo Guendouzi in midfield.
Guendouzi found it difficult at times against a quality City midfield and was criticised for failing to close down Raheem Sterling for the opening goal.
However, he showed talent beyond his years and was composed on the ball throughout the game considering it was his first outing in English football against one of the top sides in world football.
Arsenal fans have reacted to his performances on social media and here’s what they’ve been saying about the new signing.
If you actually sat down to watch that Arsenal vs Mancity match&still say that Guendouzi boy played badly, just go and see an optician cuz you’re as blind as a bat.

One of the very first names for a starting place for me

He was sloppy at first, got better later on. He is more of the flair player, a good tackler should start beside him. For me, he should not start most big games yet

The boy really balled 👏👏 he covered up xhaka’s lapses

If u bench Guendouzi now, u will kill his confidence
Since he coped quiet well playing against champions of the league, he can cope against any team

Guendouzi was at fault for the first goal and didn’t defend at well. Imagine if Xhaka was in his place when Sterling scored 😱
Who cares if you are 19 or 30. Everyone is equal when the game starts and everyone should be responsible for their mistakes.

Guendouzi showed some serious character at only 19 💪🏾 Made mistakes but never went into hiding, kept his head up, always wanted the ball and kept trying.

I’m sorry Guendouzi did not cost £89 million

From French Ligue 2 to playing against the champions in the premier league. Guendouzi did very well and was arguably our best player

Any youngster in that role will make mistakes. The kid showed bottle and he clearly has ability. He’s had a good education at Lorient, but he needs a steady, dependable player alongside him to help him mature. That’s not Xhaka.

I thought Guendouzi was very strong in midfield. Won a lot of battles, shielded well, good body positions and won free kicks. He frustrated city players who didn’t win those battles. Looked powerful and is exactly what we need in midfield.
