Arsenal fans stick up for Ozil amid shroud of criticism

Mesut Ozil is used to receiving criticism ever since he stepped foot on the Emirates turf following his move to Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013.

The German World Cup winner has often been accused of going missing in big games, and now he has come under the spotlight again.

Ozil was given the responsibility of being the Gunners’ talisman after Alexis Sanchez left to join Manchester United in January.

The midfielder signed a bumper new contract to become the club’s highest-paid player, but under manager Unai Emery, he has struggled.

The Spanish coach, who replaced Arsene Wenger in the summer, likes his teams to press high in an intense and dynamic approach.

So far, the system has not suited Ozil and as a result he was substituted with 20 minutes to go in the recent 3-2 defeat to Chelsea.

The ex-Madrid star was not even included in the squad that overcame West Ham United 3-1 at the weekend.

In 198 matches for Arsenal, Ozil has scored 37 goals and racked up 71 assists, but he is yet to make an impact after two outings under Emery.

On Reddit, some fans have jumped to the defence of their star player.
