In most cases, when a first-team player leaves a club to join one of their rivals, it is not handled well by the fans.

When Olivier Giroud walked away from Arsenal to sign for Premier League enemies Chelsea, fans were surprisingly accepting of the decision.

The 31-year-old had fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates following the arrivals of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Most fans chose not to place blame on Giroud when he ended his six-year Arsenal career to take on a new challenge at Stamford Bridge.

The striker, who has scored 76 Premier League goals in his career so far, has impressed for the Blues, which has made Arsenal supporters miss him even more, but plenty are willing him to succeed.

In fact, groups of Gunners are backing Giroud to pick up the biggest prize of them all - the World Cup.

The forward is one win away from lifting the famous trophy after France secured their place in the final with a 1-0 victory over Belgium on Tuesday night.

Giroud has played in all six of Les Bleus's fixtures in Russia, but he has not registered a single shot on target.

Despite that, the forward has been a nuisance to defenders and has been doing plenty of work off the ball.

On Reddit, some Arsenal fans have made it clear that they want Giroud to go all the way, while others feel sad that he is no longer their player.

Comment from discussion Arsène Wenger on Olivier Giroud: "I am so happy that he gets to play the World Cup final. When he was 23, he was at Grenoble, what mental strength. He didn't score, but he put in an enormous amount of effort. You can only be incredibly happy for him." (BeIN).
