When Arsenal signed Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013 for a then club-record fee of £42.5 million, it felt like a turning point for the Gunners.
With the years of financial conservatism that had been enforced by the move to the Emirates Stadium seemingly behind them, the North London club were once again in the market for the biggest names in world football. Since Ozil’s arrival, the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have all also been signed by the club.
Not only that, but at the end of the German’s first campaign in England, Arsenal ended their nine year trophy drought by lifting the FA Cup.
However, Ozil’s own form for Arsenal has been far from consistent and he has attracted plenty of criticism during his time in England. When we asked Arsenal fans whether or not they considered the 29-year-old a successful signing only 51% said yes. See the full results below.
Such division amongst the fanbase is a far cry from the huge amounts of excitement that was prevalent amongst them when Ozil first arrived at the club…
