Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk impressed and scored the winning goal on his debut in the 2-1 win against arch-rivals Everton in the FA Cup third round at Anfield on Friday night, and Arsenal fans wish they signed the Dutchman.
The 26-year-old completed a world record £75m move to join the Merseyside outfit from Southampton at the start of the month, with The Times reporting in December that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was weighing up making a bid for the centre-back.
The Netherlands international certainly showed his defensive qualities and the ability he has on the ball on his bow for the Reds, before coming up with the decisive goal when he headed home Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s corner.
Arsenal supporters were quick to have their say on van Dijk’s display via social media, and while one said “forever gutted Arsenal missed out on him”, another said “we should all be jealous” of Liverpool’s new addition.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Liverpool already getting back their money. Forever gutted arsenal missed out on him. What a player. #VanDijk

To clarify, I believe VVD is one of the best CB’s in the league & was worth £75mil. I wanted him at Arsenal & I won’t change opinion on him just because he’s gone to another club, but he was brought by LFC to defend, that’s what’ll decide whether he was worth the money he cost.

Why isn’t VVD at Arsenal there is one man to blame for that . . .

Wish Arsenal had signed VVD… could’ve offered Southampton £75M + Chambers, Debuchy, Walcott, Elneny, Coquelin & Iwobi! 👀

People keep saying about £75million for VVD. As an Arsenal fan I’m kinda jealous… what a player, what a signing!

Exactly! Great signing for Liverpool and we should all be jealous – I’d have loved him at Arsenal too. Fair play to them
