Arsenal have contacted agent of World Cup-winning star ahead of swoop

Arsenal contacted the agent of Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi last week ahead of a potential move for the Germany defender, according to Emanuele Giulianelli.

The Gunners have so far had a quiet summer transfer window, with the additions of Granit Xhaka, Rob Holding and Takuma Asano the only notable moves the London club have made.

With the latter two unproven at the highest level, there have been voices of discontent among the club’s supporters, but these may be eased by suggestions that Mustafi is a target, and that his agent has been sounded out.

The claim has been made by well-known football insider Giulianelli, who took to Twitter to reveal Arsenal’s interest in the 24-year-old:

“Last week contacts between Arsenal and the agent of Shkodran Mustafi, German defender.

“Obviously Mustafi isn’t the big deal. He’s an option for CB – though [Jeison] Murillo remains a target. Club want to get forward sorted first.”

Mustafi, who spent some of his early career with Everton, has blossomed in recent years, and was a part of Germany’s 2014 World Cup success in Brazil.

After leaving the Toffees he played for Sampdoria, whom he left to join Valencia in 2014.
