In recent years, Arsenal have become more renowned for their business off the field than they have from their actions on it.
Arsene Wenger has long been interested in improving his flailing squad, often targeting some of the biggest names in Europe as a means of firing Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League.
However, more often than not – barring a few exceptions; Arsenal have been rebuffed by some of their biggest targets.
This summer has been no different, with Arsene Wenger targeting a host of world-renowned talent in his bid to bring back Arsenal’s star power – only to be rejected by the club or the player themselves down the road.
In fact, you could build quite the team with all of Arsenal’s missed targets…
Pretty self explanatory, as Cech was one of Arsenal’s best players last season. The ex-Chelsea stopper broke the Premier League clean-sheet record last term, and now has 137 of them to his name. The first name on Wenger’s team sheet for sure.
Ever since Nevan Subtonic announced on social media that he was looking to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, Arsenal have consistently been linked with the experienced defender.
In fact, The Daily Express reported over a month ago that Arsenal had submitted a £12million bid for his signature; seemingly confirming the side’s interest.
However, 30 days later the move appears dead in the water. With no new rumours linking the pair together, it seems that either that bid was rejected or Subtonic decided against a move.
Either way – disappointment for Arsenal
Kalidou Koulibaly has seemingly been a target for a host of Premier League sides this summer, including Arsenal – but now with just under a month to go until the Transfer Window slams shut; there is still NO news on a potential deal.
With Arsenal in desperate need of an experienced defender, Koulibaly really fit the bill. However; with the Napoli defender now set to sign a new contract, Arsenal will be left disappointed – like several other British sides.
Medhi Benatia had a bit of a rough time of it at Bayern Munich
His transfer to the German champions was touted as one of the moves of the summer, however after suffering numerous injuries and failing to nail down a first team spot; Benatia’s time in Munich was off.
Linked with a host of clubs, including Arsenal, Benatia instead chose to join Juventus this summer; rejecting Arsenal on the way.
Julian Draxler has been a long term Arsenal target, stretching back to 2014 – and over the last few weeks the rumours regarding his future have perked up once again.
He apparently told Wolfsburg that he was keen to leave the club this summer, seemingly leaving the door open for a move to London.
However, Wolfsburg have firmly shut the door on any potential move; leaving Arsenal unsuccessful in getting their man once again.
Alvaro Morata was a target for a host of top European sides this summer, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.
Arsenal are not alone in missing out on this star; with each side disappointed – after Real Madrid decided they wanted to hold on to their striker.
Priced out of the deal as Madrid demanded £80 million; Arsenal made the right decision not take a step back.
N’Golo Kante was linked with Arsenal for weeks prior to his Chelsea move, and despite the lack of Champion’s League football in the Blue half of London; Arsenal were still left behind.
The Gunners have been in need of a top defensive midfielder for a long time, and whilst Granit Xhaka will do that job for the side next season; they will definitely be disappointed not to get Kante.
Henrik Mkhitaryan recently joined Manchester United…but not before rejecting Arsenal en route.
The Armenian winger reportedly was a key target of Arsene Wenger this summer, but instead chose United and Jose Mourinho.
The first in a long list of attacking targets to reject the side this summer.
This was a well documented rejection.
Arsenal reportedly bid for Vardy earlier this summer, and Leicester left it up to Jamie Vardy to determine whether he wanted to leave or not.
Much to the surprise of everyone – he chose to turn down Arsenal! He has since discussed that he has ‘unfinished business’ at Leicester; but the rejection was a real blow for Arsenal
Another well documented story.
Arsenal were chasing Higuain all summer, and a flurry of reports seemed to suggest that a deal was imminent.
However, in a sucker punch to the Arsenal faithful; Higuain instead chose to stay in Italy and join Juventus.
No doubt one of the best in the world; Higuain’s rejection this summer was probably one of the most brutal.
The only on-going transfer saga – but the ending is looking all to familiar for the Arsenal faithful.
Arsenal have bid several times for Lacazette, and have each time been denied; and with the Premier League season just weeks away; Arsenal look set to be disappointed once again.
It’s not been the best summer for Arsenal fans really, has it?
