Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn believes that Arsene Wenger may have to sign up to five players to make the club Premier League title candidates, and that a failure to do so will further “frustrate” the fans.
The Gunners enjoyed a season of mixed fortunes in 2013/14, with many tipping them as favourites to finish top of the pile after a good opening half of the season.
However a winter drop-off saw Wenger’s side battling to hold onto fourth spot over the final weeks of the campaign, with Everton having mounted a genuine challenge.
Arsenal did end their nine-year wait for silverware by lifting the FA Cup, but they had to do it via extra-time at Wembley against Hull – who had led 2-0.
Olivier Giroud was heavily relied upon for goals, while Mesut Ozil struggled to justify his £42m valuation and Winterburn believes that Wenger must get top names in this summer to produce a title challenge next time around:
“A lot of people will be frustrated if we go into the last week of the transfer window and Arsene hasn’t made any major signings,” he told talkSPORT.
“A lot of people are talking about three players that would really strengthen them. Obviously they need another centre forward, if not two.
“People are talking about the right-back situation and maybe bringing in a strong holding midfielder. There are four or five positions [that need work].”
