Arsenal hoping to agree big money midfielder deal soon

Arsenal are hopeful that they can agree a deal with Sporting Lisbon for William Carvalho by the end of this week, according to reports from The Metro.

The Portugal international was linked with a switch to north London for much of the summer, but the Gunners were ultimately unable to push the move through.

But Arsene Wenger has remained keen on the powerful 22-year-old, whom he sees as the man to add some physicality and dynamism to his midfield.

Now reports suggest that Sporting’s president Bruno de Carvalho will be in England for the Soccerex convention, and that Arsenal chiefs will meet with him to talk through a January transfer.

The main topic up for debate will be the fee needed for starlet.

The youngster has a £37m release clause in his contract which has previously been cited as the only way he will be allowed to leave, yet it’s understood that financial troubles have forced the Portuguese giants to lower their demands to closer to £20m.

Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked with Carvalho, who starred for his nation at the World Cup over the summer.
