Arsene Wenger has lodged a bid to bring St. Etienne midfielder Josuha Guilavogui to London as he indicates defeat in his pursuit of Yohan Cabaye, according to The Express.
Arsenal have made a bid thought to be in region of £8.5million in an attempt to secure 22-year-old France international’s signature as Wenger turns his attentions away from Newcastle’s Cabaye after an £11million bid was turned away last week, despite reports suggesting Wenger was expected to return with an improved £17million this weekend.
Guilavogui’s more comfortable position is in the defensive midfield role but he can also play as a centre back, which will suit Arsene Wenger as he searches for recruits who can offer versatility.
St. Etienne are willing to listen to offers as they attempt to collect enough funds to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was sold to Borrusia Dortmund earlier in the transfer window.
And reports in France suggest Guilavogui is highly unlikely to still be with Les Verts by the time the transfer window closes on Monday evening.
Meanwhile, St. Etienne are reported to be looking at Arsenal striker Park Chu-Young as a replacement to Aubameyang after they appeared to cool their interest in West Ham striker Modibo Maiga.
Guilavogui has made over 90 Ligue 1 appearances for St. Etienne since making his first-team debut in 2009.
