Arsenal idol backs Wenger to follow FA Cup with more trophies

Former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires believes that his old club will win more silverware in the coming seasons after Arsene Wenger guided them to FA Cup glory on Saturday.

The Gunners ended their nine year wait for a major trophy at Wembley as they beat Hull in extra-time, easing the pressure on their veteran manager.

Early on it looked as if the Londoners’ big match hoodoo would be extended as the Tigers raced into a 2-0 lead within 10 minutes, but eventually Aaron Ramsey saved the day with a neat finish to prevent penalty kicks.

With their long success drought having been now broken, Pires – who was a part of the famous ‘invincibles’ Arsenal team under Wenger – believes that his old club can go on to win more honours:

“Yes they can.” He told talkSPORT when asked if Arsenal can win more trophies in the next few seasons.

“The club’s last Premier League title was ten years ago now. It was an amazing season, we were unbeaten and it was a special time for Arsenal.

“It’s very important when you play for big clubs that you win trophies, so today was very important for the club. The FA Cup is a great trophy, a historic competition in England.

“It was important for the team and for Arsene Wenger as well and I hope they can win more from now on.”

But Pires also feels that Wenger will have to spend big this summer to replace exiting stars if the club are to move forward:

“I think the club need to spend a lot of money over the summer to prepare for next season.

“The objective is always to compete in the Champions League and the Premier League, and with Fabianski leaving and Sagna probably going as well, we need to build on the squad.”
