Arsenal in battle for French starlet

Arsenal are set to go head-to-head with Roma in the race for Auxerre striker Paul-Georges Ntep, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The 21-year-old has been earning rave reviews for his recent performances in the French second tier, and has been hailed as one of his nation’s finest emerging talents.

Arsene Wenger is thought to have been alerted by the youngster’s displays, and may be ready to swoop for his signature in January in a bid to bolster his side’s attacking options.

Auxerre value their man at around £8.5m, and are keen to sell for close to that figure to stave off their current financial worries.

However, the Gunners could face serious opposition in the shape of Roma.

The resurgent Italian side are believed to be watching Ntep ahead of a potential offer in the New Year.

One trump card Wenger may have in the battle for the French U-21 international is the player’s own desire to move to the London club, with the starlet having already declared that he is open to switch to the Emirates Stadium:

“Arsenal is a club that trusts young players. But it would all depend on the project,” he told L’Equipe.

“If it is going to a new club to remain on the bench, what is the improvement? I don’t ask to be in the starting 11 of a big club immediately, but I could help in the not too long-term.”
