Arsenal legend Paul Merson has revealed how he believes that the club need to launch a huge £70m for Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema in order to win the Premier League title, according to reports in the Express.
The French star was extensively linked with a move to the Emirates, though a move never materialized and he remains in the Spanish capital.
Merson, now a Sky pundit, who played for the Gunners for over a decade between 1985 and 1997, has stated ‘they should have gone for Benzema.’
‘He should have put a bid in for £70m and if he didn’t want to come, so be it.’
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was the only manager in Europe’s top five leagues not to bring in a single senior outfield player of the summer, and was the subject of criticism as a result.
The North London giants have only Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott to call on as recognised first-team centre forwards, having only signed ‘keeper Petr Cech over the summer months.
