Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has told Arsene Wenger to sign a holding midfielder in January, as reported by the Daily Star.
The Gunners have suffered a number of injuries in midfield this season, with key players like Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla both facing lengthy spells on the sidelines.
Arsenal boss Wenger has been criticised in the past for not strengthening that area of his squad but in light of recent injuries, he may be forced to bring in reinforcements this January.
Merson said: “I still think they need a holding midfielder in January.
“Mathieu Flamini did OK against Manchester City but if he has to play 15 games they are not winning the league.”
Arsenal had been labelled as favourites to win the Premier League in recent weeks but they’re surprise 4-0 defeat away to Southampton on Saturday night has heaped further doubt on their ability to go all the way.
Coquelin is Arsenal’s first choice holding midfielder and although Flamini is capable of playing in that role, he is no longer the quality back up Arsenal need to mount a serious title challenge.
