Arsenal hero Ray Parlour wants his old club to save their season with a January double swoop for Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin.
The Gunners have registered their worst ever start to a league campaign under Arsene Wenger this term, with yesterday’s draw at away at Liverpool rather fortuitous given the Reds’ dominance of the 90 minutes.
For much of the campaign the Frenchman has been forced to use players out of their natural positions, with the sale of Thomas Vermaelen and injuries in midfield having left the Londoners short of options.
Full-backs Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy have been used as centre-halves, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has had to operate in a central midfield role, leading to much criticism from the Emirates Stadium crowd.
Speaking in a Q&A session with Sportlobster, Parlour said that signings are needed next month to get his old club back into the top four hunt, with Hummels and Schneiderlin his choices:
“Winston Reid has been mentioned, but I’m not sure he’s the quality we need.
“Mats Hummels would be great, a world cup winner and a good player.
“For midfield, I would go for [Morgan] Schneiderlin if you can get him. He’s at a good age.
“Lots of players are linked. [Sami] Khedira would have been great. Players that have played in big games won’t be phased by anything. Schneiderlin hasn’t, but I can see him improving.”
