Arsenal’s pre-season tour to the Far East has started with a bang – on and off the pitch.
A hat-trick for Olivier Giroud in a 7-1 victory over Vietnam in Hanoi was preceded by 7-0 drubbing in Jakarta of Indonesia All Stars. Arsenal have also been playing a great game in the field of PR stopping their coach to let an avid fan on board to have autographs signed.
Going one step beyond that was Per Mertesacker illustrating his dance moves for fans after the Vietnam game. It certainly won the hearts and minds of the masses. All this from a team who used to be consigned to the green fields of Austria by their manager when they could have been making huge sums of money touring the booming countries of Asia.
The question is how will Arsenal top their exploits in Vietnam? After moving onto the neon lights of Tokyo, it seems they have found a way.
At their first training session they gave the local media a free, user-friendly Asian style phonetic guide to pronouncing the player’s names. One of the best ones has surely got to be that of German Per Mertesacker, or Pur-Mert-Tiss-Sackar as the Japanese media will now know him as.
