Arsenal look to Swansea to solve crisis

Swansea Defender Ashley WilliamsArsenal chief Arsene Wenger is set to turn to Swansea’s Ashley Williams in a bid to solve his defensive injury crisis, according to reports from The Mirror.

Both Thomas Vermaelen and Nacho Monreal are facing lengthy spells on the sidelines, which has left the Frenchman fairly short on options.

As a result, he is set to reignite his interest in Williams, who has been on his radar for some time.

The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for the Welshman earlier this summer, but the Swans’ desire to keep hold of the talismanic centre-back effectively ended all hope of a switch to London.

But, Wenger could now be willing to meet the Liberty Stadium outfit’s £8.5m price tag.

Arsenal scouts are said to have been in attendance for Swansea’s recent Europa League qualifier against Malmo, and are thought to have been impressed by Williams’ performance.

The 28-year-old is said to be keen to move to the Emirates Stadium, with a possible transfer likely to be his last chance of Champions League football.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are close to agreeing a deal with Roma for Ivorian flop Gervinho.

The winger has endured a torrid two seasons in England, and is said to be happy to reunite with former Lille coach Rudi Garcia in Italy.
