Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil fears that he may have played his last game for the Gunners, according to The Mirror.

What's the story?

After a public relationship breakdown between the German and Unai Emery, Ozil has found himself playing very little football this season and has only started twice for the club during the current campaign.

Emery recently said that the German does not deserve to start Premier League games ahead of some of the club's youngsters and is now looking to offload the £350,000-a-week star in the January transfer window.

Indeed, Turkish club Fenerbahce are said to have emerged as an option for Ozil in the January transfer window, per Takvim.

End of the saga

Arsenal may have unhooked themselves from the millstone which hangs around the neck of the club in terms of Ozil's astronomical wages. This could free up essential funds for Emery to invest in other areas of his squad.

His lack of work rate has been the main bugbear in the manager's thoughts of the former Germany international as he has preferred the likes of Reiss Nelson, Bukayo Saka and Matteo Guendouzi, per The Mirror.

When Ozil arrived on the scene in north London after his £42.5m move from Real Madrid in 2013, he was described by Arsene Wenger as a "great player" with "proven quality" at both club and international level.

However, despite winning the World Cup in 2014, the German has been unable to find the form that many Arsenal supporters loved during his early years at the Emirates.

Ozil was the quickest player in Premier League history to reach 50 assists in as little as 141 games for the Gunners, but he now finds himself unable to break into the starting XI.

If Arsenal can manage to get him off the wage bill for good the club could breathe a sigh of relief, and begin to look to the future.
