Gonzalo Higuain has passed a medical ahead of a £34.5million move to Napoli, reports the BBC.
The Argentine’s future has been the topic of constant speculation for the majority of the summer, with Arsenal thought to have taken a strong interest in signing the forward.
It now appears Rafael Benitez has won the race for the striker’s signature, as Higuain completed the formalities leading up to the deal being announced.
The news will come as a blow to the Gunners, who had been the firm favourites to complete the signing for the entire summer.
The turning point arrived when Napoli were forced to sell Edinson Cavani to Paris St Germain, and identified the 25-year-old as the Uruguayan’s replacement.
Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has also completed a medical ahead of his season-long-loan move from Anfield.
Napoli have been busy in the transfer market this summer, with Higuain becoming their third signing from Real Madrid alone.
Striker Jose Callejon and defender Raul Albiol have already completed moves to the Serie A side, as well as winger Dries Mertens from PSV Eindhoven, this summer.
Higuain will no doubt prove the marquee signing however, with the forward boasting an impressive record of 107 league goals in seven seasons at the Bernabeu.
