According to reports in The Mirror, Arsenal have been alerted by the spat between Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and left-back Luke Shaw, and could be tempted to move for the £80,000-a-week star this summer.

What's the word, then?

Luke Shaw in action for Manchester United

Well, Mourinho publicly criticised the 22-year-old for his performance in the 2-0 win against Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday, after taking the England international off at half-time.

The Mirror now says that the former Southampton defender could look to leave United this summer following another breakdown in the relationship between him and his boss, with Arsenal and their Premier League rivals Chelsea both likely to be keen.

The Mirror adds that the Gunners may well be looking for a long-term replacement for Nacho Monreal, who is 32 years of age and who will have just one year left on his contract at the Emirates Stadium this summer.

How has Shaw done this season?

It has been another tough campaign for the left-back, who found himself fourth-choice in that position earlier on this term with Ashley Young, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo all preferred ahead of him.

However, the 22-year-old began to work his way back into Mourinho's plans just before the festive period and started four successive Premier League matches between December and January, before he was once again replaced by Ashley Young in big fixtures against Liverpool in the top flight and the knockout matches against Sevilla in the Champions League.

Shaw has made 19 appearances in total this season, but it remains to be seen whether he will add to that tally given his latest falling out with his manager.

Would he be a good signing for Arsenal?

He certainly could be, yes.

Because he has seemingly been around so long after breaking through as a teenager at Southampton, it is easy to forget that Shaw is still only 22 years of age and he has plenty of time to reach the great potential that he clearly has.

The England international is lacking confidence and sometimes fitness and good concentration on the pitch, but he has the raw ingredients needed to be a brilliant left-back or left wing-back and perhaps just needs a new environment where a manager puts his arm around him rather than publicly criticising him.

Arsenal need to find a long-term replacement for Monreal sooner rather than later given that the fans haven't always been impressed with Sead Kolasinac, rated at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, this season, but any move for Shaw would surely anger the 24-year-old.
