Mesut Ozil is confident that Arsenal can compete for major honours this season.
The German playmaker completed a shock deadline day £42.4m move to the Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid, becoming the club’s only major signing of the summer.
Although the Gunners have gone almost a decade without winning a trophy, the 24-year-old is confident that success is coming, and that the club have the players capable of bringing silverware to North London.
“In the last few years, Arsenal haven’t been so successful, but we want to become more successful,” Ozil told the club’s official website.
“We want to win trophies. I think the fans are looking forward to that too.
“We have a very strong and a very young team that can improve a lot under the manager. I think we will win trophies because we have the potential [to do so].”
Ozil had been a key player for Real over the course of the past few seasons, but with the arrival of new boss Carlo Ancelotti and signings such as Isco and Gareth Bale, his chances of securing regular first-team football appeared slim.
This, and Arsene Wenger’s vision for Arsenal, convinced the midfielder to make the move to London, despite serious interest from French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Some rumours suggest that Premier League rivals Manchester United also made a late move for his signature, but were unsuccessful.
Is Mesut Ozil right? Can Arsenal compete for trophies? Or is their spot in the top four under threat from Tottenham and Liverpool?
