Arsenal plan shock Man United raid

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is considering a surprise £12m summer move for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, according to reports from Goal.

The Frenchman is believed to have started drawing up his plans for the off-season, and has made strengthening his backline a priority.

With Bacary Sagna looking likely to leave the Emirates Stadium when his contract expires in a few months’ time, signing a replacement for the experienced full-back is a priority.

Although he started his career as a centre-back, Smalling is able to fill in in a wider position and is seen as a genuine option by Wenger.

There is also talk that the 24-year-old is unsettled at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting pictures of him out on the town partying while out of action through injury led to disciplinary action from the club.

Arsenal could be an appealing option to the versatile enforcer, whose £52,000-per-week wages would fit nicely into the Gunners’ salary set-up.

Smalling may also be seen as an option to fill in for Thomas Vermaelen, with the centre-half expected to leave the club at the end of the season.
