Arsenal plotting January swoop for Basel ace

Fabian Schar (Basel)Arsenal are pondering a January move for Basel defender Fabian Schar, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Swiss centre-back has quickly emerged as one of the top rising talents in European football following a series of impressive domestic and European displays.

His fine form has alerted Gunners chief Arsene Wenger, who is believed to be keen on bolstering his backline this winter.

The Londoners strengthened their attacking options in the final third of the pitch over the summer, but are still short on cover at the back.

Reports suggest that Wenger is ready to make a significant offer for the 21-year-old when the transfer window re-opens in a bid to fend off rival interest.

Tottenham are one other side to have shown an interest in Schar, with Andre Villas-Boas believed to be a fan of the youngster.

A number of clubs from across the continent are also monitoring the Basel enforcer, with Inter Milan believed to be one of the most attentive parties.

Schar helped his club to claim the Swiss league title last term, and has been rewarded by stepping up into his nation’s senior international side – for whom he has made three appearances.
