Arsenal could end up being disappointed in their bid to sign Bernard, after the player’s father revealed Brazilian international team mate Hulk has told the youngster that Porto would be the ideal club at which to develop, reports the Daily Express
Widespread reports have confirmed the Gunners’ interest in the 20-year-old, although it is understood they are yet to launch an official bid, and now risk being beaten to the signing by Portugese giants Porto.
Speaking to O Jogo, Bernard’s father, Delio Duarte, said: “Nothing is decided yet but we know there is interest from Arsenal. However, there has been nothing official from them.
“Hulk has convinced Bernard that Porto would be better for him at this stage of his career.”
Arsenal were considered the strong favourites to secure the signing of the young playmaker, who admitted he was likely to move on from Atletico Mineiro this summer.
However the Gunners were told they would have to cough up a club record £22million to secure the player, and have been waiting to offload Ivory Coast international Gervinho before making their first bid.
Roma were understood to be interested in signing the forward for £8million, but a move has yet to materialise for the Ivorian, who earns £50,000 a week at the Emirates.
The dawdling has allowed Porto to move in, and their former striker and Brazilian team mate has told Bernard it would be an excellent club at which to develop further.
“Porto would be a better move for his career,” Duarte added.
“It would be a dream of mine to see him playing for them.”
