Arsenal push for German midfielder, but NOT Khedira

The Daily Star is reporting that Arsenal are negotiating a deal for German midfielder Lars Bender.

The Premier League outfit are looking to take their summer spending to over £60million with £16million Bender, after already signing Alexis Sanchez and Mathieu Debuchy. Wenger is hoping to sign the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder, after struggling to sign Sami Khedira.

The Real Madrid man is the Gunners’ preferred option, but the club are unwilling to meet the German’s wage demands. Khedira is in the final year of his current £50,000-a-week deal at Madrid, but wants to treble his wages in a move to the Emirates. Wenger isn’t prepared to pay him more than Sanchez or Özil, who earn £135,000-a-week.

Bender could join up with World Cup winners Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker, and Lukas Podolski, who are expected to try their best to convince the 25-year-old to move to the Emirates. The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder scored 3 Bundesliga goals in 29 appearances last season, but failed to get into Joachim Löw’s successful World Cup squad.

Wenger is looking to build a squad capable of lifting the Premier League title again, and on the back of their FA Cup success, has managed to bring in Alexis Sanchez for £37million, and Debuchy in from Newcastle for £11million.
