Arsenal ready to rival Chelsea in £30m transfer scrap for fearsome centre-half

According to reports from The Express, Arsenal are ready to rival Chelsea in the battle to sign Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas during the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old is rated as one of the top centre-backs in Serie A and has been in good form for Giallorossi this season, averaging 2 tackles, 1.7 interceptions, 4.5 clearances and 2.8 aerial duels per match.

The Express revealed earlier this month that the Greek international is a prime transfer target for incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, along with Roma team-mate Radja Nainggolan.

But the latest reports – citing website Football Insider – claim Premier League rivals Arsenal are also in the mix to sign the 23-cap centre-half, who is valued at around £30million, during the coming transfer window.

According to Football Insider, the Gunners came close to signing Manolas from Olympiacos in summer 2013, but a deal collapsed at the last minute and he ended up sealing a transfer to the Stadio Olimpico instead.

The north London outfit are now ready to revive their transfer interest, but Chelsea represent formidable competition for the defender’s signature – and his Roma contract doesn’t expire for another three years.
