Arsenal don’t need £40m strike ace & here’s why…

Reports this morning have revealed that Edinson Cavani is keen on a move to Arsenal, who are in return keen on a move for Edinson Cavani. Lovely stuff, right? Well, nope! The Uruguayan may be a top performer with a decent reputation, even on the back of a slightly underwhelming spell at PSG, but the Parisians still want around £40m, and the Gunners already have Olivier Giroud.

There’s little to go on in terms of knowing whether or not Cavani would be a big hit at the Emirates Stadium, but what we do know is that Giroud is mightily effective. Not the most fashionable of players – well, on the pitch – The Frenchman gets results, with the Gunners having won 60% of the games they’ve featured in with the ex-Montpellier ace. Conversely, they’ve won just 36.4% without him on the pitch. And he once again proved his worth over the weekend…

Then there are the stats. With Giroud having featured on fewer occasions in the league this season than his opponent in this realm, the numbers – crunched by Squawka – take into account averages per 90 minutes. In most areas, Giroud comes out on top, with big target man registering more goals, more shots (of which more are in the area), more key passes and more chances created. In fact, Cavani only really triumphs on shot accuracy (52% to 50%).
