Arsenal have been given the all-clear to make a move for Southampton midfield maestro Morgan Schneiderlin as fierce North London rivals Tottenham have now turned their attention to Everton’s James McCarthy instead.
Although Everton boss Roberto Martinez is determined to keep the Irishman at the club, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is prepared to pull out all the stops in his efforts to land the player in the January transfer window.
However, a £25 million price tag may prove to be a stumbling block for the White Hart Lane club, with a number of sales likely to be needed before any concrete offer is made.
Morgan Schneiderlin – with whom Pochettino worked when the pair were at Southampton – was initially Spurs’ primary transfer target, but they have now fallen behind Arsenal in the race to sign the Frenchman.
Schneiderlin looked set to leave the Saints in the summer and while he remained at the club, his future is still far from certain.
