Arsenal set to enter talks with Tottenham target Leon Goretzka

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are set to open talks with Schalke star Leon Goretzka in January.

What’s the Story?

Arsenal could be set to steal Leon Goretzka away from Tottenham, who have been long-term admirers of the German midfielder.

The 22-year-old is out of contract in the summer and is expected to make a move away from Gelsenkirchen.

However, recent reports have suggested Tottenham were also in the race to sign the promising midfielder.

How good has Goretzka been this season?

Arguably the best young player in the Bundesliga for the last 18 months, Leon Goretzka continues to show why Transfermarkt value him at £20.7million.

When fit, the midfielder has been in fine form for his club, scoring four goals in nine games and winning two player of the match awards in the process.

A phenomenal box-to-box midfielder, Goretzka’s contribution to both phases of the game makes him a man in high demand across Europe.

Would Goretzka be a good signing for Arsenal?

Considering how much Arsenal have spent on their midfield over the last 3 years, it is amazing to see just how often they fail to win the battle in the middle of the park. Francis Coquelin, Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed Elneny have all struggled to find form, whilst Granit Xhaka is proving to be one of the more disappointing Arsenal signings of recent season.

When fans are calling for the injury-prone Jack Wilshere to start almost every game, it is an indication of a serious lack of fan trust in the current crop of central midfielders.

Therefore, the signing of Leon Goretzka would be an absolutely perfect addition to the Gunners squad. The 22-year-old could be a mainstay of the side for years to come, which is why Arsene Wenger should act fast to seal the deal before their North London rivals make an expected move.
