Gunners chief Arsene Wenger is believed to have been handed a sizable transfer budget for the coming months, with the club’s hierarchy keen to secure a safer passage into the Champions League next term.
The Frenchman is said to be targeting attacking reinforces, in a bid to inject further creativity into his squad.
Reports suggest that he has highlighted Gaitan as one of his major targets, and is willing to spend big to secure his signature.
Benfica are far from keen to allow one of their star men to move on, and are holding out for a £40m fee, which would activate the Argentine’s release clause.
The 25-year-old has previously been linked with Manchester United, but it is unclear as to whether the Red Devils will reignite their interest in the coming months.
Gaitan was a key member of the Lisbon side’s squad that reached Europa League final last term, and also impressed domestically.
Meanwhile, Wenger is said to be tracking Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, who is valued at around £25m.
As well as the striker, both Cesc Fabregas and Marouane Fellaini are on the Londoners’ wish list.
