Arsenal are set for disappointment in the hunt for Roma ace Cengiz Under as the Italian side are set to hand the Turkey international a new deal, CalcioMercato reports.
Unai Emery is starting to make an impression at Arsenal after nine consecutive victories across all competitions but he still has work to do with the Gunners, as he eyes new recruits heading towards the January window.
Arsenal failed to replace Alexis Sanchez following his move to Manchester United in January and have been linked with a host of targets in the wide positions, one of which is Roma starlet Cengiz Under – but the Gunners are set to be handed a blow.
CalcioMercato states the Italian side are set to hand a new deal to the Turkey international, who is also a target for Bayern Munich and Manchester City, as they are keen to secure the future of the 21-year-old.
Widely regarded to be one of the finest young attacking talents in European football, it was always going to be difficult for Arsenal to win the battle to sign Under and the fee required to tempt Roma into a sale would have been monstrous.
Therefore, the setback now being reported is not a major concern and Emery should have a long think as to whether the club really does need to sign a winger as the Gunners have a number of quality youngsters coming through.
Alex Iwobi has settled into life under Emery extremely well, while Emile Smith-Rowe has also impressed in the opportunities he has earned this season and Reiss Nelson is making waves on loan with Hoffenheim, while he also scored and provided an assist on his debut for England’s U21 side.
With Iwobi well established and that duo coming through the ranks, the need for a winger is perhaps not as severe as originally thought.
