Arsenal set to reignite interest in Bundesliga star

Arsenal are ready to reignite their interest in Bayern Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender, after a failed bid for the German international last summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Arsene Wenger has been a long term admirer of the defensive midfielder, and is desperate to complete his signing during the summer transfer window.

The Gunners failed with a bid of £19million last summer, but Wenger is refusing to give up on signing the talented 24-year-old.

Arsenal have made a habit of signing German players in recent times, and have been linked with more Bundesliga stars over the last year.

Chief scout Steve Rowley has watched a large number of Bundesliga fixtures this season and has been particularly impressed with the Bayern Leverkusen star.

Bender – whose twin brother Sven plays for Borussia Dortmund – is seen as the ideal long term replacement for Mikel Arteta, who is set to turn 32 tomorrow.

Wenger is looking to bring in a younger midfielder as a replacement for next season, and sees Bender as the ideal candidate.

The Gunners have also been linked with Borussia Dortmund star Ilkay Gundogan, but the feeling is that Bender will prove easier to sign.
