Monaco have submitted a bid for Arsenal target and World Cup star Aleksandr Golovin according to Russian news outlet Sport Express.

What's the story?

The 22-year-old has played all his club football at CSKA Moscow where has made 81 appearances in the Russian Premier League, scoring nine goals.

The central midfielder had a fine World Cup, guiding the host nation Russia to an unexpected Quarter Finals where they lost out on penalties to Croatia who went on to reach the final.

He scored once and assisted twice and his stellar performances have attracted interest from Chelsea and Arsenal but now it appears Monaco have edged ahead in the race for his signature after submitting a bid for the talent according to the report.

Not over yet

Arsenal still have a chance in signing the World Cup star but they may have to act soon as the competition hots up for the star who is valued at £22.5million on Transfermarkt.

Golovin could make a fine midfield pairing with new signing and fellow World Cup talent Lucas Torreira under Unai Emery's new look Arsenal, and the Russian would certainly be an upgrade on current option Granit Xhaka.

It would be a huge coup if the Gunners could clinch Golovin and they would be remiss not to try.
