Manchester City are ready to block any advances from Arsenal for Patrick Vieira to replace outgoing manager Arsene Wenger, according to the Mirror.

That is actually a blessing in disguise for the Gunners, who should shelve any notions of a romantic reunion with their legendary captain and pursue more experienced targets.

What's the story, then?

The 41-year-old Frenchman was skipper in North London for many years and had been mentioned in relation to the soon to be vacant top job at the Emirates Stadium.

Yet, apparently, as New York City - Vieira's current club - are part of the same empire as Manchester City, the North West club have the right to veto any interest from the Gunners.

Further, the report goes on to say that City have earmarked the former France international as a potential long-term successor for Pep Guardiola and have also rejected advances from Wales to coach their national team on a part-time basis.

Arsenal need experience

Vieira has at least been a manager for a number of years but the Gunners job is going to be a huge one; taking over from an iconic manager who has built a club in his own image is no easy task.

The links between the former captain and the club would appear to be founded on romantic notions of a perfect reunion - but it rarely works like that; even Ryan Giggs eventually left Manchester United.

Therefore, if City aren't willing to let Vieira leave, it would be something of a blessing in disguise and a real sign to the Arsenal board that they must look elsewhere.
