According to The Mirror, Arsenal are interested in a move for Chelsea’s Gary Cahill to plug a defence plagued with injuries but, by the summer, they could have a far better option available than the former England international in David Luiz.
Well, The Mirror reported earlier in the month that Maurizio Sarri will allow Cahill to leave in January in search of game-time – the 33-year-old has made just seven appearances in all competitions for the Blues, including just one in the Premier League, despite being a mainstay in the lineup since his move from Bolton in 2012.
The Gunners are reportedly interested in a move for the centre-back as Rob Holding has sustained a knee injury that will see him sidelined for the remainder of the season, but they should bide their time and make a move for another soon-to-be out-of-contract defender at Stamford Bridge.
David Luiz is expected to leave Chelsea as he has been unable to agree terms for a new deal with the club’s stance over contract negotiations with over thirties refusing to waver – Unai Emery and co. must capitalise by making a pre-contract approach for the Brazilian so that he may join for free in the summer.
With the currently injured Shkodran Mustafi proving on many occasion that he cannot be relied upon in defence, a new central defender has to be top off Emery’s wish-list, especially with Holding – the Spaniard’s most consistent centre-half this season – now ruled out until next season.
Luiz has frequently been scapegoated for the Blues’ rare defensive frailties in recent years but has been pretty immense under Sarri, with an all-conquering performance in a win over champions Manchester City the most impressive to date.
The 31-year-old would be a beneficiary of Emery’s preference to play a three-man defence – he proved under previous Chelsea boss Antonio Conte that he excels in such a set up – and his ability to bypass the midfield with a raking long-ball will be a dream for the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. The former is the Prem’s top scorer currently, with 12 strikes, and will surely be able to produce similar figures next year with Luiz pinging balls in behind the opposition.
