Two games. Two wins. The perfect start for Arsenal. The north London side had not won their opening couple of Premier League fixtures since the 2009/2010 season, so the victory against Burnley certainly took on extra significance.

But perhaps more important than the six points they have accumulated so far, has been the way in which they have earned them. Unai Emery's men have not been anywhere near their best against either Newcastle or Burnley, but ground out two impressive wins nonetheless.

Against the Magpies, the Gunners negotiated what is usually a difficult away fixture with relative ease. Calum Chambers and Sokratis refused to get bullied by Newcastle's big-money signing Joelinton, whilst teenagers Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson put down an early marker for the season with their energetic displays. In the end, the classic '1-0 to the Arsenal' score-line was rich reward for a battling performance.

Indeed, against Sean Dyche's stubborn and resilient Burnley side on Saturday, Arsenal similarly had to dig deep to grind a victory. Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood caused huge problems with their physicality, the latter winning five aerial duels and taking the same amount of efforts at goal, whilst every dead-ball situation was met with a certain unease from the Emirates faithful. But the players stood up to the task well.

The Gunners' calamitous end to last season had all the trademarks of the old-school deficiencies. Defensively weak, mentally fragile and wilting under pressure. But in the opening to this campaign, Emery's men have negotiated two tricky tests with flying colours. Their work on the ball still needs a lot of improvement, but there appears to be a greater appreciation for doing the 'dirty side' of the game. The backline won 18 aerial duels between them, while the whole team weighed in with 11 interceptions - both totals being higher than Arsenal's per-game averages last season.

If the north Londoners are to return to the glitz and glam of the Champions League, then it will be based on whether they are willing to get their hands dirty like they have done so far, and then combining it with the scoring prowess of their forward options in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette who both netted against the Clarets.
