Arsenal star attracting Serie A interest

Thomas VermaelenThomas Vermaelen could leave Arsenal in January, with Serie A giants Inter Milan set to offer him an escape route out of North London, according to talkSPORT.

The Gunners captain has found himself out of the first team picture in recent times, as he has been unable to break up Arsene Wenger’s first choice centre back partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

And last week the Belgian suggested he would consider his club future in January, with the World Cup in Brazil next summer looming.

Vermaelen is also set to enter the final 18 months of his contract in the new year, meaning he will be forced into making a decision whether to sign an extension or make a move in the near future.

Inter Milan are in the market for a new centre back, having shipped six league goals in their last two outings. Manager Walter Mazzarri believes his defence to be a cause for concern, and has started keeping track of Vermaelen’s situation in North London.

The Italians are believed to be preparing a January spending spree, having recently been taken over by Indonesian billionaire Erick Thohir.

27-year-old Vermaelen has been at Arsenal since 2009 after signing from Ajax. The Belgian has made 97 appearances for the Gunners in that time.
