Arsenal step up interest in Lyon midfielder

Lyon midfielder Maxime GonalonsArsenal are set to up their interest in Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons, according to reports from The Metro.

The Gunners are believed to be in the market for reinforcements this summer, with manager Arsene Wenger keen to challenge for the Premier League title next term.

He is rumoured to have earmarked Gonalons as a potential signing, and is impressed by feedback he’s received from the club’s scouting team.

The 23-year-old was watched during Lyon’s Europa League clashes with Tottenham, and was particularly impressive during the second leg.

Gonalons is regarded as one of the top talents in French football, and has made nearly 100 first-team appearances for Lyon, despite his youthful age.

He has long been linked with a move away from Ligue 1, with his employers’ financial worries prompting the sales of a number of big name stars.

The player himself has displayed a desire to make an eventual move, citing the Premier League as one of his desired destinations:

“I like the English and the German leagues,

“When I see the pitch and that type of game, I feel it’s a dream.”

Lyon are said to value Gonalons at around £12m, a figure that Arsenal should be able to meet.
